Make the Most of the Time Your Child Spends Out of School
With school lasting only about seven hours a day, parents wonder what to do with their children after the final bell. Although there is no specific law that says what age your child must be to stay home alone, Oregon child neglect laws strongly say that the child should be at least 10 or older to stay home alone.
When You Can't Be Home...
Many parents have to work long after school is over. What do you do? Do you hope your child stays safely in the house with the TV to keep them busy? Do you rely on a neighbor or relative to watch your child? Children’s experts say that between 3 pm-6 pm each day – when school is out and parents aren’t home – are the hours that kids get into the most trouble.
Supervised After School Programs
Help prevent your child from getting into trouble by finding a supervised after-school program through your community or school district. These structured programs will also boost your child’s success at school and build social and problem-solving skills.
